Samsung said it held a talk on the 31st at the Samsung Human Resources Development Center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, to which it invited OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. About 50 executives from Samsung Electronics and other affiliates attended. Chosun Biz reported that executives from affiliates in electronics, finance, biotech and other fields were present, and AI Newspaper (인공지능신문) reported that they discussed how AI will change the industrial landscape and management strategy for the next 10 years.
Samsung's plans were also reported. According to EBN, Samsung intends to speed up its company-wide AI transformation (AX) by raising AI skills starting with its executives. Digital Daily reported that Samsung is continuing cooperation with OpenAI on semiconductors and data centers and aims to give all employees AI training by February 2027. iNews24 noted that the talk expands exchanges that followed Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong's visit to OpenAI's headquarters in July.
SK also had a meeting with Altman. EBN and Chosun Biz reported, citing business circles, that SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won had lunch with CEO Altman at an undisclosed location in Seoul on the 31st, and that key executives of SK hynix and SK Telecom were also reported to have attended. EBN and Kukmin Ilbo wrote in their headlines that cooperation on HBM and data centers is drawing attention. Kukmin Ilbo reported that on Oct. 1 last year, the two sides signed a letter of intent (LOI) for memory supply and a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on AI data center cooperation in southwestern Seoul at SK Seorin Building in Jongno District, Seoul.
In recent developments, Altman said on the 27th (local time) at Oracle AI World in Las Vegas that the top priority for companies right now with AI is to understand and defend against AI-driven security threats (Digital Daily). On the same day, the 31st, EBN and Chosun Biz, citing the Financial Times, reported that OpenAI cut its external fundraising target by $10 billion.
Glossary HBM (high-bandwidth memory) is a high-performance memory that stacks DRAM chips in layers to speed up data transfer and is mainly used in AI accelerators. AX is short for AI transformation, meaning the adoption of AI across a company's work and business to change how it operates.
