OpenAI to Acquire Orchestra Bio, an AI Platform for Coordinating Drug Development
Key points
- OpenAI announces acquisition of Orchestra Bio
- Technology to be combined with life sciences AI tool Rosalind
- Building AI agents to support the whole drug development process
OpenAI said it will acquire Orchestra Bio, an AI platform company that coordinates drug development. Chosun Biz reported that OpenAI said so on the 20th (local time), and Digital Today, citing TechCrunch, wrote that specific deal terms were not disclosed.
OpenAI will combine Orchestra Bio's technology and staff with Rosalind, its AI model and tools for life sciences research. The tool's name is spelled differently across Korean outlets, such as GPT-Rosalind in Uihak Shinmun (의학신문) and a different transliteration in Chosun Biz. AI Times reported that the aim is to build AI agents that support drug development as a whole.
AI Newspaper (인공지능신문) explained the background: a new drug takes 10 to 15 years on average to reach patients, and many decisions and collaborations interlock from preclinical research through manufacturing, clinical trials and regulatory approval. Digital Today described Orchestra Bio, in its fourth year since founding, as a biotech software startup.
