OpenAI Unveils 'GPT-6.1 Terra' With API Prices Cut in Half
Key points
- OpenAI unveils GPT-6.1 Terra
- API price about half that of previous models
- Available via ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API
OpenAI unveiled 'GPT-6.1 Terra,' an AI model with stronger computer-work abilities and lower usage costs. Digital Today reported that the model, released on the 26th (local time), is a mid-tier model, while Korean outlets such as iNews24 and Betanews reported on the 27th what OpenAI said. According to Chosun Biz and Digital Daily, GPT-6.1 Terra is available through ChatGPT Work, Codex and the OpenAI API.
The outlets agreed that the model's features are understanding visual information and carrying out computer tasks. Betanews wrote that it combines visual reasoning, computer control and writing to handle high-volume work quickly and cheaply. Drafting documents, interpreting blueprints, filling in forms and editing video were given as examples, and IT Chosun said its feature is automating tasks such as writing proposals, interpreting technical drawings, entering data and editing video while improving cost efficiency. AI Newspaper (인공지능신문) explained that its ability to interpret visual information on screen and actually perform tasks has been strengthened. Chosun Biz reported that reasoning and coding abilities were also strengthened.
The price comparison point was described differently by each outlet. iNews24 wrote that the standard API price was cut 50% below the earlier 'GPT-5.6 Terra' and 'GPT-6.1 Sol,' while AI Times reported that the API price was set at half that of GPT-6.1 Sol. AI Times said external evaluations also showed lower cost per task and fewer hallucinations, and Chosun Biz said in its headline that performance and hallucinations improved. Betanews highlighted double the coding performance in its headline.
Reports on price competition around OpenAI also continued recently. AI Times reported on the 26th that OpenAI is drawing away Anthropic customers' spending with price discounts and free credits on Codex and API models, and that at some companies the usage shares of the two companies' models have reversed. The same article wrote that Anthropic also regained the lead in usage on a model brokerage service after releasing a new model. iNews24 reported on the 25th that OpenAI will also provide its AI models and Codex-based agentic work features through Google Cloud while keeping Microsoft as its main cloud partner.
Glossary An API is a set of rules that lets programs exchange functions and data with each other, and developers use APIs to connect AI models to their own services. A hallucination is when an AI plausibly produces content that is not true.
