Key points
- Anthropic files IPO registration with the U.S. SEC
- Seeks Nasdaq listing under ticker ANT
- Computing costs and loss of control cited as investment risks
Anthropic, the U.S. AI company that developed Claude, has begun the process of an initial public offering (IPO). Chosun Biz and iNews24, citing Reuters, reported that Anthropic submitted its filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on the 26th (local time). Kukmin Ilbo, citing Bloomberg and others, reported that Anthropic filed to list on the Nasdaq Global Select Market and that its ticker is ANT.
Outlets worded their outlook on the size differently. Chosun Biz, Newsis and iNews24 reported expectations that it could be the largest IPO ever. IT Chosun, based on a Wall Street Journal report, wrote that the market sees a valuation of up to $2 trillion (about 2,853 trillion won). Industry News said in its headline that the company aims to raise 133 trillion won at a $2 trillion valuation.
Financial details and risk factors revealed in the registration statement were also reported. Industry News said first-half revenue surged and operating losses narrowed, but long-term computing costs and uncertainty in demand forecasts were presented as investment risks. Newsis pointed out that revenue jumped in the fast-growing enterprise AI market but that huge infrastructure investment costs and losses were also revealed, making it a test of AI industry profitability. IT Chosun cited the burden of astronomical AI infrastructure investment and a unique governance structure as variables for the IPO's success.
Follow-up reports continued. Digital Daily reported that Anthropic cited the possibility of AI control failure and semiconductor supply instability as business risks, and Newsis reported that, in a warning running about 90 pages, Anthropic said its technology could contribute to curing diseases and economic growth but could also cause a catastrophe threatening humanity's survival. Digital Today, citing The Information, reported that seven Anthropic co-founders pledged not to put ads in Claude. On market reaction, Digital Daily reported that tech stocks rebounded on Wall Street, Newsis reported that Japanese stocks closed higher on expectations of Anthropic's listing, with the Nikkei up 1.73%, and Industry News wrote that the KOSPI closed up 3.09% as investor sentiment recovered on news of Anthropic's IPO.
