Key points
- Ministry of Science and ICT appoints head of National AI Service Innovation Promotion Team
- Kim Se-woong, former Kakao AI Synergy performance leader
- Term runs through Sept. 30, 2028
The Ministry of Science and ICT appointed Kim Se-woong, a former Kakao AI Synergy performance leader (vice president), as head of the National AI Service Innovation Promotion Team. The ministry announced this on the 1st. According to iNews24, his term runs from Nov. 2 to Sept. 30, 2028.
Digital Today, citing the ministry, reported that the National AI Service Innovation Promotion Team is an organization newly created to quickly develop and provide AI services that people can feel in their daily lives.
According to Chosun Biz, Kim is a private-sector expert who founded and ran the tech startup Mighty Works in 2009 and then took charge of AI technology development, service commercialization and infrastructure building at Kakao.
Outlets explained the meaning of the appointment differently. IT Chosun reported that the government brought in an expert from Kakao's executive ranks to head a dedicated organization so it can directly develop AI services that people can feel in their daily lives. AI Newspaper (인공지능신문) reported, in essence, that the appointment is meant to apply private-sector AI development capabilities directly to public service innovation, and that the government is moving away from public IT projects centered on outsourced development. The title also varied: AI Newspaper (인공지능신문) wrote 'former Kakao AI vice president' in its headline, while Chosun Biz and IT Chosun wrote 'AI Synergy performance leader (vice president).'
Glossary Public IT projects are projects in which the government and public institutions build and operate the information systems they use for work. Outsourced development is a method of handing system development to an outside company.
