IMF: 'Korea's Potential Growth Rate to Rise for Second Straight Year, First in 40 Years,' on AI and Chip Boom
Key points
- IMF forecasts Korea's potential growth rate to rise this year and next
- Two straight years of increase is the first since 1986 and 1987
- EBN also points to weak employment behind the AI boom
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecast that Korea's potential growth rate will rise for a second straight year, this year and next. Korea NGO Times, citing the IMF's October World Economic Outlook released on the 18th, reported that a second consecutive rise in the potential growth rate is the first in 40 years, since 1986 and 1987, a period of the three lows boom.
EBN wrote that a forecast has emerged that, helped by the AI and chip boom, Korea's potential growth rate, a gauge of its underlying strength, will rebound for a second straight year for the first time in 40 years. Korea NGO Times also cited the chip and AI boom as the cause in its headline.
However, EBN did not view the forecast only optimistically. Noting that the fruits of growth are concentrated in a few large companies and advanced industries, it also covered the employment chill hidden behind the AI boom in its headline.
